PADRES ON DECK: RHP Lizarraga Works 7 Scoreless Innings; SS De Vries Homers Again

Right-handed starting pitcher Victor Lizarraga, the Padres’ №10 prospect, allowed two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over seven innings Thursday night to lead Double-A San Antonio to a 2–0 Texas League win in Midland.

Catcher Brandon Valenzuela (.244), the Padres’ №11 prospect, was 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly for the Missions. Third baseman Marcos Castañon (.229), the Padres’ №13 prospect, was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Meanwhile, designated hitter Leodalis De Vries (.238), the Padres’ 17-year-old №4 prospect, was 2-for-3 with a solo home run (his ninth in his last 22 games), two walks and two runs scored for Single-A Lake Elsinore. Third baseman Rosman Verdugo (.261), the Padres’ №23 prospect, was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run for the Storm.

Center fielder Homer Bush Jr. (.274), the Padres’ №8 prospect, was 2-for-4 with his 43rd stolen base and a run scored for High Single-A Fort Wayne. Left-handed starting pitcher Jagger Haynes (4.26 ERA), the Padres’ №18 prospect, gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks with nine strikeouts in five innings for the TinCaps.

Left fielder Tirso Ornelas (.311), the Padres’ №25 prospect, was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, a RBI and a run scored for Triple-A El Paso. Center fielder Jose Azocar (.287) was 3-for-5 with a solo home run, a stolen base and two runs scored. Third baseman Matthew Batten (.253) was 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, a sacrifice fly, two RBIs and a run. Catcher Brett Sullivan (.275) was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.

First baseman Lamar King Jr. (.275), the Padres’ №20 prospect, was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the Arizona Complex League Padres. Seventeen-year-old Humberto Cruz (0.00 ERA), the Padres’ №26 prospect, gave up a hit with a strikeout in a second straight, scoreless, one-inning start in the ACL.

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (40–59) — SALT LAKE 8, Chihuahuas 7 (10 innings): SS Mason McCoy (.232) was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. 2B Clay Dungan (.257) was 1-for-4 with a stolen base. 1B Nate Mondou (.275) was 1-for-5 with a run. Starting LH Omar Cruz (3.72 ERA) gave up 2 runs on 3 hits with no walks and 7 strikeouts in 5 innings. LH Luke Westphal (8.10) gave up 3 runs on 3 hits with a K in an IP. RH Tommy Nance (4.88) gave up a run on 2 hits, 2 BBs and a hit batter with a K in 2 IPs. LH Paul Fry (4–3, 4.88) gave up 2 runs (1 earned) on a hit and 2 BBs with a K in an IP to take the loss.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (14–9, 45–46) — Missions 2, MIDLAND 0: 2B Ripken Reyes (.209) had a double and a run scored in 3 at-bats with a sacrifice bunt behind Valenzuela and Castañon. CF Connor Hollis (.221) was 1-for-4 with a RBI and a stolen base. LF Zach Reks (.123) had a double in 3 at-bats. RF Robert Perez Jr. (.219) was 1-foir-3 with a hit-by-pitch. 1B Robbie Tenerowicz (.248) was 1-for-4. RH Francis Pena (1.25 ERA) followed Lizarraga and issued a walk and hit a batter with a strikeout in 2/3rd of a scoreless inning. LH Jason Blanchard (3.29) had 2 Ks in 1 1/3 perfect IPs to earn the save.

HIGH SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (9–17; 37–56) — DAYTON 4, TinCaps 3: LF Nick Vogt (.241) was 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs, 2 stolen bases and a run scored behind Bush. RF Joshua Mears (.178) was 2-for-4 with a stolen base. 1B Romeo Sanabria (.287) was 1-for-3 with a RBI and a walk. 2B Nik McClaughry (.172) was 1-for-3 with a run. C Anthony Vilar (.256) was 1-for-4. RH Dwayne Matos (3.95 ERA) followed Haynes and gave up a hit in 1 2/3 scoreless innings. LH Jackson Smeltz (2–1, 1.54) gave up an unearned run on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts in 1 1/3 IPs to suffer the loss.

SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (15–12, 47–44) — STORM 5, Visalia 4: RF Jacob Campbell (.258) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored behind De Vries and Verdugo. LF Ryan Wilson (.218) was 1-for-4 with 2 RBIs. 1B Kaden Hollow (.152) was 1-for-3 with a walk. SS Chase Valentine (.252) was 1-for-4 with a run. 2B Jose Sanabria (.231) was 1-for-4. Starting RH Eric Yost (5.18 ERA) gave up 4 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. RH Yerry Landinez (6.28) pitched 1 1/3 perfect IPs. LH Harry Gustin (4.24) allowed a hit with 3 Ks in 2 scoreless IPs. RH Alejandro Lugo (2–1, 3.07) had a K in a perfect IP to earn the win.

ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE PADRES (24–36) — Padres 2, ROYALS 0: RF Kashon Conliffe (.193) was 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base behind King. DH Lucas Dunn (.279) was 1-for-3 with a stolen base. LF L.J. Jones (.418) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. LH Zack Qin (1–0, 0.82 ERA) followed Cruz and issued 2 walks with a strikeout in 2 hitless, scoreless innings to earn the win.

DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE PADRES GOLD (17–20): GOLD 3, Guardians 2: SS Yimy Tovar (.239) was 2-for-2 with a double, 2 RBIs, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. RF Jesmaylin Arias (.299) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a hit-by-pitch. 1B Estiven Giron (.194) was 2-for-4. CF Gustavo Marquez (.267) was 1-for-2 with 2 walks and a run scored. Starting RH Luis Maracara, 16, (3.21 ERA) gave up 3 hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts in 4 scoreless innings.

DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE PADRES BROWN (8–27): ORIOLES 9, Brown 1: 2B Yorvin Morla (.229) was 1-for-3 with a walk. 1B Juan Martinez (.231) was 1-for-1. PH-1B Joan Sierra (.135) had a double in 3 at-bats with a run.
