PADRES ON DECK: Mitchell Hits 3rd Homer in 2 Games as AAA-El Paso Wins Ninth Straight
For the second straight night, Rancho Bernardo High grad Cal Mitchell was the offensive leader as Triple-A El Paso won a ninth straight game with an 11–4 victory at Las Vegas.
Left fielder Mitchell (.275) was 3-for-4 Friday night with a double, a home run, a sacrifice fly, four RBIs and two runs scored. Mitchell had two home runs in four at-bats with three RBIs Thursday night.
Mitchell has 21 home runs on the season tying him with Tirso Ornelas and Eguy Rosario for the El Paso (63–85) team lead.
Three Chihuahuas homered Friday. Catcher Brett Sullivan (.263) hit his 17th homer, a solo shot, in four at-bats. First baseman Kevin Plawecki (.263) hit his 11th homer, a three-run shot, in three at-bats with a walk.
Designated hitter Luis Campusano (.387) was 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored. Center fielder Bryce Johnson (.292) was 2-for-5 with a RBI, a hit-by-pitch, a stolen base and a run.
Rosario (.266) was 2-for-3 with two walks, a stolen base and two runs. Third baseman Matthew Batten (.251) was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs. Second baseman Clay Dungan (.251) had a triple in four at-bats with a a walk and a run.
Starting right-hander Randy Vásquez (2–6, 8.21 earned run average) gave up two runs on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts in five innings to earn the win.
Right-handed reliever Kevin Kopps (5.86 ERA) gave up a run on two hits and two walks in two innings. Right-hander Francis Pena (5.52 ERA), the Padres’ №13 prospect, gave up a run on two hits with three strikeouts in an inning. Left-hander Paul Fry (4.76 ERA) gave up a hit in a scoreless inning.
